Venezia
Venice by daylight resists the photographer β too bright, too crowded, too sure of itself. So this work was made after midnight. Over four trips and many nights of wandering, averaging twenty kilometres on foot across the city's hundred-odd islands and its bridges, I photographed the calli, the rami and the silent canals once the crowds had gone. Freed from daylight and footfall, Venezia reveals another face: quiet, enigmatic, seemingly unmoored from time. Begun in monochrome and resolved in colour, the series lets street lamps, still water and the faint glow behind shuttered windows do the work the sun once flattened. Beneath the beauty lies something more fragile β a city fifteen centuries old, an astonishing feat of engineering, yet no longer certain of permanence. To lose your way here is not a misfortune but a gift. I promise you'll find something beautiful along the way.
If a corner of this Venice stays with you, the complete series lives on in Venezia, the photobook β available in the book shop.
